Are you ready for one of the most historic, exhilarating races in the world? The Athens Marathon, happening on November 9-10, 2024, is a race that promises inspiring views, a challenging course, and a breathtaking finish at the iconic Panathenaic Stadium. With over 70,000 runners expected to flood the streets of Athens, this year’s event will be nothing short of spectacular.
Here’s your essential guide to race day, transportation tips, and all-important traffic regulations.
Marathon Quick Facts
Anyone born in 2006 (18+) is welcome to join the full Marathon Road race, with a total time limit of eight hours for completion. The race kicks off at 9am sharp, and all runners are expected to finish by 5:42 p.m., accounting for the staggered start times. As always, participants run at their own risk; organizers strongly recommend all runners, especially those with cardiac conditions, undergo a full medical examination prior to the race.
Getting to the Starting Line
Athens Marathon organizers provide buses to transport participants from six key points in central Athens to the starting area, with services running from 5:30 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. These buses depart from major metro stops, including Sygrou-Fix, Syntagma, Panepistimio, Evangelismos, Katechaki, and Omonoia, with the final bus leaving Syngrou-Fix at 6:15am. It’s advised not to drive to the starting area, as Marathon Avenue will close to traffic at 8am sharp. Runners choosing to drive should plan to arrive by 8am to ensure ample time for the 800-meter walk from parking to the start.
Bag Drop & Clothing Management
Upon arrival, runners will be given a special poncho and should proceed to the starting point without delay. Participants can check their clothing bags on site; the bags are then transported to the finish area and returned upon presentation of their race number. Only the official race-provided bags are allowed, and they should not contain valuables. Bags must be checked in no later than 8:20 a.m. to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Starting Blocks & Warm-Up
Runners are assigned to starting blocks based on their recent race times, with a “wave start” allowing blocks to begin sequentially. To secure a front-row position in your block, arrive early and complete your warm-up at least 20 minutes before start time. The starting process involves 13 waves, including a separate start for disabled athletes. Once the race begins, all unneeded clothing can be deposited in the bins for donation and recycling.
