Witness History in the Making (or Reliving!)

If you find yourself in Athens on this special day, you’ll be right in the heart of the action. The historic center transforms into a sea of Greek flags, with Athenians gathering by the thousands to commemorate the War of Independence.

The Grand Parade: A Must-See Spectacle

The main event? A grand military parade that marches through Syntagma Square. Dignitaries like the President of Greece and members of the Greek Orthodox Church lead the way, while celebratory school parades happen all across the country. During the parade, you’ll see student groups in unique uniforms representing their schools and heritage. The student leading the line, holding the Greek flag, is typically the top achiever from the previous year. It’s not just students though – professional teams like firefighters and the military, all decked out in official attire, also showcase their marching skills for the Athenian crowd.

This impressive display of national pride kicks off around 11 am and winds its way down Panepistimiou Street, passing iconic landmarks like the Academy of Athens and the National Library, before concluding at Omonia Square.

A Delicious Tradition: Bakaliaros Skordalia

No celebration is complete without delicious food! As the festivities unfold, you’ll likely catch the enticing aroma of frying fish. Follow your nose and discover “bakaliaros skordalia,” a traditional Greek Independence Day dish featuring fried salted cod bathed in a garlicky potato and olive oil sauce. Try to combine it with ouzo or tsipouro ideally.

This tasty treat also coincides with the Greek Orthodox observance of the Annunciation, making it a delicious fusion of cultural significance. As spring warms up and summer approaches, it’s the perfect time to try a traditional mastiha ice cream! It’s a delicious way to celebrate the changing season.
