Every February, Athens sheds its winter calm and steps into something far more playful. Apokries, Greece’s carnival season, is when the capital swaps routine for rhythm, colour, and wonderfully joyful chaos.
From 1 to 22 February 2026, neighbourhoods across the city host parades with live music, masked revellers, dance performances, and street parties that spill across squares, markets, and main avenues. It’s festive, it’s loud, it’s beautifully unpolished and it’s one of the most spirited times to experience Athens like a local.
A City-Wide Celebration
Carnival in Athens isn’t confined to one central parade route. It starts through the historic centre and stretches into neighbourhood communities, each adding its own vibe.
All You Have To Expect: Traditional folklore groups in regional costumes, Brass and drum ensembles, Spontaneous street dancing, Playful satire and theatrical performances, Folk customs revived and reimagined.
One highlight includes the custom of the “Kordelata” from Naxos, presented by the “Bacchae” Cultural Society, a striking island tradition brought right into the heart of the city.

Clean Monday – A New Restart
The revelry flows seamlessly into Clean Monday (23 February 2026), a deeply rooted Greek tradition marking the start of Lent. Athenians head outdoors for kite flying, music, and relaxed communal picnics. It’s also festive, but softer, joyful and reflective. A beautiful contrast to the carnival exuberance of the days before.
