What is Carnival for Kids in Athens: From Face Paint to Parades

Due to Greece’s lively carnival season, Athens fills with colour, music, and laughter every year during Apokries. In 2026, from 1 to 22 February, the city is actually a playground of festive excitement, offering a magical experience for families, locals, and visitors. Streets, squares, and parks across the capital run parades, live performances, dance, and interactive activities that turn everyday life into a carnival spectacle.

Why Families Will Literally Love This Carnival

Athens doesn’t just cater to party-goers, it puts children at the heart of the celebration. The Carnival for Kids 2026 programme invites little ones to dive into a world of creativity and joy with games, performances, face painting, crafts, mascots, and interactive workshops. Mapping Athens Through Carnival Traditions

Beyond the family-friendly festivities, Athens’ carnival season is highly active and rich in tradition. Colourful parades wind through the historic centre, linking communities that host neighbourhood carnivals with folk rituals, spontaneous street performances, and extravagant costumes. From local markets to main squares, something surprising is always around the corner, creating an authentic experience for both kids and adults.

The celebrations crescendo on Sunday, 22 February, with the grand city centre parade, culminating in Kotzia Square. Here, music, dancing, and a festive city-wide atmosphere take over, seamlessly flowing into Clean Monday on 23 February, when Athenians celebrate outdoors with kite flying, music, and communal feasts.
