Every time this year a new cycle of art events takes place to welcome spring and summer, and visitors from all over the world pay a visit to them. Plenty of creative activities, educational – interactive programs, performances, and concerts surround festivals, theaters, cultural centers, and other places. So if you are coming or already being to Athens, take the opportunity to attend at least one of the following recommended happenings:
ADD 2022 – Two days of electronic music: Athens celebrates electro sounds with the ADD Festival as part of the Athens Festival, welcoming international and Greek artists from the house, techno, freestyle, experimental, and nu-jazz genres. Tickets are available online for these exact dates and times: 27/05 to 28/05/2022 at 19:00.
21st Athens Jazz Women in Jazz – Parallel Actions: The longest-lived musical institution comes back from May 23 to 29 with live shows & DJ sets, an international conference, two photo exhibitions, The Meet Market, and open-air screenings. The festival gets you to learn about the women who marked the history of music and jazz while the entry is free.
Sundays in Athens – Museums celebrate!: Dedicated to the International Museum Day, this series of actions returns on May 22 and calls everyone to participate for free. The program involves educational programs, art workshops, and creative games in the venues of the Industrial Gas Museum, Central Library, Arts Center, “Eleftherios Venizelos” Museum, “Angeliki Chatzimichali” Museum of Folk Art and Tradition, “Metaxourgeia” Gallery, “Melina” Cultural Center “A Melifa”. Athens Photo World 2022 – World Press Photo: Photographic works that stood out in reportage and documentary depicting current events and crises will be in this annual exhibition for the fourth year. The show will present a variety of themes for viewers as the series features the contribution of photojournalists in the making and ongoing history. Entry is free, and the events will last from 20 until 29 May for the Athenian audience and the city’s visitors.
Tribute to Iannis Xenakis – Xenakis Alive: Onassis Stegi, University of Athens, Xenakis Association, and the University of Peloponnese collaborate for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Iannis Xenakis to honor the internationally renowned, one of the most important artists of the 20th century and the heavily influential composer of Greek origin. Four artists converse with his music world, creating new works or renewing his compositions. The music event starts from 25 May and tickets can be found here.
Group Tours & Outdoor Art Workshops in the courtyard of OTE Group Telecommunications Museum: On Sunday, May 22, an open-air art workshop will occur where participants are to make telephones and satellites from pine needles. At the same time, a group tour of the Museum’s permanent exhibition will help them discover the history of telecommunications from ancient Greece to the modern digital sphere. Book places here.
Athens City Festival 2022 – Open Air Cinema Week: Movie screenings under the night sky in Athens are all about this series’ event. Open Air Cinema Week this May is part of the new Athens City Festival organized for the cinephiles who want to enjoy some contemporary Greek cinema in an urban era. 3 Rooms – Greek National Opera / SNF (Stavros Niarchos Foundation): Three contemporary dance pieces directed by three distinct choreographers for the season finale happen between 18 May 2022 and 22 May 2022. Byzantine music, tradition, and youth are the first performance’s themes. Mozart, theater frame, aggression, and sexuality are the second subject, while techno, Israeli music, and mambo sounds are the last but not least projects’ focus.
