This year, one of Greece’s most enduring cultural institutions, the Aeschylia Festival, marks a historic milestone: its 50th anniversary. Organized by the Municipality of Eleusis, with the support of the 2023 Eleusis European Capital of Culture, the festival runs from August 31st to September 28th, 2025, offering a month-long celebration of theater, music, cinema, and visual arts.
For the first time, part of the program will unfold in the newly renovated IRIS paint factory—a landmark of Eleusis’ industrial heritage, now transformed into a vibrant space for culture and contemporary expression.

A Grand Opening in the Sacred Grounds of Eleusis
As tradition dictates, the curtain rose on Sunday, August 31st at the archaeological site of Eleusis with Angelos Sikelianos’ “The Last Orphic Dithyramb & The Spiritual March”. This evocative staging connected Sikelianos’ vision with the Promethean spirit of Aeschylus, blending poetry, music, and ancient hymns, performed by acclaimed artists such as Marios Frangoulis and Filareti Komninou.

A Festival Rooted in Heritage, Looking to the Future
The Aeschylia Festival 2025 is more than a cultural event as it is a bridge between the ancient and the modern, the sacred and the contemporary, the local and the universal.
With events ranging from shadow theater in neighborhood squares to world-class performances at the archaeological site, Eleusis once again becomes a hub of artistic creation, dialogue, and reflection.
As it celebrates half a century of history, the festival continues to honor its namesake, Aeschylus, the father of tragedy, while opening space for new voices and forms of expression.
